Estimates are still coming in for how much this will cost to repair, but it will not be cheap.

Sad news for families that have relatives buried at the Waxahachie city cemetery. Sometime between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning someone destroyed hundreds of gravestones at the cemetery. At least 275 have been damaged to this person or persons actions. Some were simply knocked over and others appear to have been smashed by an object.

Officials with the cemetery are now looking to figure out what to do with some of these gravestones. Some were in the historic part of the cemetery and were over 100-years-old. One was the grave site of Emory Rogers, one of Waxahachie’s first settlers. Leaders plan to consult with restoration experts to make sure the historic gravestones are properly preserved.

Volunteers who want to help with the cleanup are asked to coordinate with the city’s parks and recreation department. The Waxahachie Police Department is investigating as to who could have possibly done this. Any tips can be submitted to 469-309-4426. If you're wanting to donate to the repairs of the gravestones, you can do that.

Mailed to City of Waxahachie, P.O. Box 757, Waxahachie, Texas 75168. Please include CEMETERY DONATION on the memo. Credit card donations may also be accepted by calling 469-309-4170.

Many in Waxahachie are wanting a massive reward to find those responsible. Local CrimeStoppers says they already have a reward in case tips come in that lead to an arrest. Any money that you would like to send to increase a reward should go to the gravestones they say. The need is greater for the restoration at this time.
